Tree & Shrub Program

Beautify and protect your landscape by deep root treating your ornamental sized trees and shrubs. Custom Turf recommends a 6-step treatment program that provides superior root growth, color, flowering potential, and insect and disease resistance.

Step 1 - Early Spring

Systemic Insect Control

We inject a systemic insect control (MERIT®) into the root zones of those trees and shrubs potentially bothered by insects. MERIT is an outstanding product that provides systemic insect resistance with a very low toxicity to birds, fish and mammals. This resistance is the foundation for Custom Turf’s full season of superior control.

Step 2 - Early Spring

Horticultural Oil

A horticultural oil is applied to those plants that typically harbor over-wintering insect eggs such as leaf miner, mites and scale. Horticultural oil effectively suffocates the eggs preventing hatching adults from multiplying and causing plant injury.

Step 3 - Late Spring

Integrated Pest Management

During the late spring, we will selectively spray those ornamental sized trees and shrubs that are experiencing or have a potential disease or insect problem.

Step 4 - Early Summer

Integrated Pest Management

During the early summer, we will selectively spray those ornamental sized trees and shrubs that are experiencing or have a potential disease or insect problem.

Step 5 - Late Summer

Integrated Pest Management

During the late summer, we will selectively spray those ornamental sized trees and shrubs that are experiencing or have a potential disease or insect problem.

Step 6 - Fall

Fertilization Injection

During the fall months, we deep root inject a slow release fertilizer plus micronutrients into the root zone. This provides the necessary release of nutrients to keep the plant material strong through the season.

What you can do to keep your trees and shrubs healthy and beautiful

Pruning

Pruning is one of the most important tasks that you can perform in your landscape. The objectives are to allow more light into the branch structure of the plant, to control legginess, to achieve a more desirable overall shape and enhance flower and fruit potential. There are 3 methods of pruning as shown below:

Pinching - pruning the tip or growth portion of the branch.

Heading - pruning the branch well back from the tip.

Thinning - pruning flush with the branch collar. Thinning allows more light into the branch structure promoting an open more natural look

Pinching and heading promote branching and bushier growth.

Flowering trees and shrubs should be pruned after the blooming is over.

A 3” layer of mulch is ideal for maintaining soil moisture and controlling weed growth
