As the cool weather approaches and leaves begin to change color, we can’t help but get out and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. And since Pittsburgh is home to some of the most inviting, serene, and unknown campgrounds, we thought we’d share a list of our favorite spots to enjoy the outdoors and reconnect with nature.

Raccoon Creek State Park

Less than an hour outside the city, you’ll find a 7,500-acre park with endless outdoor opportunities. Housing a 101-acre lake, trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and a variety of campsites and campgrounds, this park is perfect for a relaxing weekend getaway. You can even host group events at its lakeside lodge with group tents, or you can even use one of their group cabins—perfect for family reunion fun!

Quebec Run Wild Area

For more experienced hikers and campers, Quebec Run Wild Area offers a less-populated, back-to-basics form of camping. To maintain its “wild” character, neither permanent structures or vehicles are allowed on the grounds. And with no established restrooms or water fountains, only more skilled campers are encouraged for overnight excursions. This park is the perfect location for tougher, more technical mountain biking and hiking.

Bear Run Campground

If you’re looking for a more convenient camping setup, look no further than Bear Run Campground, a family-oriented location perfect for a quick weekend getaway. Boasting a variety of overnight options from RV and tenting grounds, to rustic and deluxe cabins, this destination is easy to access and enjoy. Combined with their activity offerings including kayaking, canoeing, and even a wild animal park, your family is sure to enjoy the last few months of comfortable camping weather.

Fox Den Acres

For true wildlife fans, Fox Den Acres offers exciting experiences and an incredibly convenient location. As the largest campground near Pittsburgh, this site has an exciting wildlife museum and hosts events during its months of operation, typically May through October. Events like Treasure Week, Halloween parties, and golf outings provide a little something special for everyone.

Keystone State Park

Looking to get a little wild? Look no further than Keystone State Park, located in the heart of Pennsylvania and host to some of the best wildlife sightings in the Pittsburgh area. Its 78-acre lake is prime real estate for fishing fanatics and sightseers alike, while its marshland area is an exciting rarity you won’t want to miss!
